MPI Warns Manitobans about phone scam
– – –
Manitoba Public Insurance is warning customers not to give any personal information to an automated voice messaging system that offers to renew Autopac policies or driver's licences over the telephone.
Several people in the Dauphin, Virden and Erickson areas of western Manitoba were contacted recently under the apparent scam, MPI officials said Thursday.
The automated messaging system asks people about their Autopac policy or driver's licence, then asks for a credit-card number.
MPI does not conduct business this way, officials said, and brokers never call individual customers directly about renewing their coverage.
Anyone who receives the message should hang up and contact police or Phonebusters at 1-888-495-8501.
